Web Deflection Detection System
The Web Deflection System (WDS) is composed of a Display Unit, Deflection Measuring Head with extensions and adjusting hardware, Angle Measuring Head, connecting cables, and carrying case. A small transducer located within the Deflection Measuring Head measures minute deflections occurring within the webs of the crankshaft. Indicators on the Deflection Measuring Head assist with the proper installation between the throws or webs of the crankshaft. The Angle Measuring Head attaches to the crankshaft, to provide the angle reference for each measurement. The Display Unit provides remote indication of both deflection and angle of rotation. Separate buttons zero the deflection reading and preset the angular position. The display will also change color whenever the deflection exceeds selected limits.
Advantages
Crankshaft distortion can result in excessive cyclic stress in the crankshaft leading to fatigue and shortened life. Distorted crankshafts can also cause bearing overheating, bearing failure, and problems with other moving parts with close tolerances. Web deflection measurements have been vital in avoiding crankshaft failure, but are often inconvenient to make and prone to error. In some cases, it is quite difficult to see and read the measurements using the old mechanical gauges. The Riverhawk WDS provides an easy and accurate way of performing the web deflection measurements with its remote display and angle indication.
The WDS is the only product in the world designed to work with the WebMap2 Software. When used in combination with the software, the WDS allows the user to automate data collection and more easily perform analysis. The WDS can then monitor and analyze trends in crankshaft web deflection as part of a comprehensive maintenance program.
The WDS can connect to a laptop or PC via a standard cable with 9-pin "D" connectors which connect to a standard RS-232 serial communications port. The WDS provides a steady stream of data which is monitored by the PC and captured every 10 degrees of rotation. After each rotation, the data can be reviewed and then stored. Later the entire data set can be analyzed by the WebMap2 software.
